Expert Spotlight - Derma Fillers

Dr Sophia is a GP and Harley Street trained aesthetician, as well as the founder of Wellness by Sophia – a Luton based clinical beauty lab. Here, she shares her expert information, advice and tips for undergoing dermal filler procedures.

What is a Dermal Filler?

Dermal fillers are one of the easiest and most effective methods for restoring a youthful appearance by reducing wrinkles and improving skin texture. They act by augmenting the skin's supply of hyaluronic acid, a major humectant and elastin precursor. Dermal fillers are composed of stable, non-animal hyaluronic acid that closely resembles the hyaluronic acid found in the body, ensuring a natural-looking enhancement.

Types of Dermal Filler

Non-surgical rhinoplasty - A painless, non-invasive, and non-surgical method for reshaping the nose. Dermal fillers are utilized in Rhinoplasty to contour or smooth the nose's abnormalities and lumps.

Chin augmentation - Can be either surgical or non-surgical, it uses state-of-the-art dermal fillers to augment your chin. The result is a well-defined chin in perfect aesthetic harmony with other facial features.

Cheek augmentation - A non-surgical dermal filler treatment that uses the hyaluronic acid-based filler that can define the cheekbones. This helps redefine your face and enhance its natural curves.

Lip augmentation - This is done by injecting dermal fillers into the upper and lower lips to enhance your lips, making them look fuller and plumper.

Tear trough - A tear trough treatment using dermal fillers can remove the dark circles and hollows, between your lower eyelid and cheeks, restoring its volume. It is a painless, long-lasting, and quick treatment.

Jawline enhancement - Jawline enhancement or jawline contouring is a minimally invasive dermal filler procedure that helps create a more defined separation between the neck and jawline. This procedure is a great way to safely change your chin, jawline, and entire face by providing a change in jaw definition.

The procedure

Step 1. After a comprehensive consultation with the you, and areas of concern will be identified and assessed.

Step 2. The area will be cleaned with proper cleaning solution and a numbing agent will be administered.

Step 3. Once the anaesthetics are in effect, the injectable will be used. As the filler goes in, you might feel a little bit of pressure, but aside from that, it is a relatively painless procedure. The treatment usually takes between 20 and 30 minutes in total, depending on the number of areas being treated.

Step 4. The filler will be placed in line with the specifications, after which the area will be cleaned and you will be informed of the aftereffects and safety net. Temporary swelling may be observed.

How long do the results last?

Results can last up to 12 or 18 months, but occasionally they can be metabolised sooner - each person is different.

What are the risks and side effects?

Most serious side effect is unintentional injection into blood vessels which causes skin necrosis, stroke, and blindness. It's rare, but an untrained practitioner can cause irreversible damage. If the clot is caught early, hyaluronidase can reverse its consequences.

Things to ask your practitioner

Ensure that you discuss the reasons and expectations from the treatment early on, so your practitioner could better understand your needs. Additionally, both parties should be clear on possible treatments' risks and side effects.
